Led by the Spirit

Galatians 5:18 states: “But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.”

This verse highlights a profound truth about Christian living. When we are led by the Holy Spirit, we are no longer under the Law as a means of obtaining righteousness before God. The Law was never given as a way for sinful people to save themselves. Instead, God gave the Law to reveal His holy standards and to show humanity their need for a Savior. The Law exposes our inability to achieve righteousness on our own and points us to Christ.

Being led by the Spirit means that our actions and decisions are influenced by God's presence within us. This does not mean we disregard God's commands. Rather, we obey Him from a transformed heart instead of merely following a list of rules. What the Law could never accomplish because of human weakness, God accomplished through His Son and through the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers.

As Romans 8:2–4 explains, “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

These verses show how the Spirit enables us to live according to God's will. We are no longer trying to earn God's acceptance through our own efforts. Instead, we live in the freedom that comes from being united with Christ.

This freedom is not a license to sin. In Galatians 5, Paul contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit. A person led by the Spirit does not become more sinful. He becomes more Christlike. The Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These qualities fulfill the very righteousness that the Law pointed toward.

As 2 Corinthians 3:17 reminds us, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” This liberty is not freedom to do whatever we want. It is freedom from the power of sin and freedom to live in a way that honors God.

Galatians 3:24–25 also helps us understand the purpose of the Law: “Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.” The Law served as a guide that revealed our need for Christ. Once we place our faith in Him, we are no longer under the Law's supervision as a means of gaining righteousness. We are now led by the Holy Spirit.

In your walk with Christ, being led by the Spirit means embracing this freedom and allowing Him to guide your life each day. It means trusting God's grace, depending on His strength, and following His direction. As you do, your life becomes a testimony to the transforming power of Christ. Your actions no longer flow merely from a sense of duty but from a heart changed by God's love.

This is the essence of true Christian living: a life empowered by the Holy Spirit, marked by obedience, and lived in the freedom that Christ has provided.
