We Don’t Always Eat What We Should—We Eat What We Want

Many believers are spiritually starving and don’t even realize it. Jesus said we don’t live by bread alone, but by every word from God. This post reminds us to feed our spirit daily with the Word that gives life.
“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.”
—Matthew 4:4
We eat regularly. Some of us even plan our day around meals. But let’s be honest—it's not always what’s good for us. We often reach for what’s easy, fast, and tasty. Junk food, snacks, or whatever’s convenient.
And we do the same thing spiritually.
We know what we should feed on. Prayer. Quiet time with God. Reading the Bible. Sitting still and listening. But instead, we fill up on things that don’t last. Social media. News. TV. Worry. Distraction. We grab what’s quick instead of what truly nourishes us.
But our spirit needs more than a snack.
Jesus knew this firsthand. In the wilderness, after forty days of fasting, Satan came after Him at His weakest moment. But Jesus stood His ground with Scripture:
“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
If Jesus leaned on the Word to stand strong in temptation, how can we think we’ll make it without it?
Job said it plainly:
“I have not failed the command of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.” (Job 23:12)
When we neglect the Word, we start to feel it.
Our faith weakens. Our peace slips.
We lose our strength and start leaning on our own understanding.
But when we go to the Word daily—when we truly eat it and let it sink deep—it changes everything.
Jeremiah said,
“Your words were found and I ate them, and Your words became a joy to me and the delight of my heart.” (Jeremiah 15:16)
That’s what the Word is meant to be. Joy. Strength. Life.
Don’t treat it like a side dish.
Don’t nibble on a verse here and there just to check it off.
Sit down with it.
Let it feed your spirit.
Let it fill the empty places.
Because just like skipping meals leaves you weak, skipping the Word leaves your spirit starving.
Today, ask yourself:
What are you feeding your soul?
Are you reaching for spiritual fast food, or are you filling up on the Bread of Life?
Jesus said,
“I am the bread of life; the one who comes to Me will not be hungry, and the one who believes in Me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35)
Let that be the meal you come back to—every single day.
