State needs to offer more career options

Wyoming has always been a place defined by its vast horizons, rugged beauty, and deeply rooted sense of community. It’s a state where people still wave to their neighbors, where families gather under wide-open skies, and where safety and simplicity create the foundation for raising children. Yet, despite all that we cherish about living here, the Wyoming Business Council’s recent data paints a sobering picture – one that calls for urgent and united action.

According to the WBC, Wyoming may be heading toward long-term economic decline. The population continues to grow, but the workforce is not keeping pace. Fewer workers mean fewer businesses, which in turn means fewer opportunities for our young people. And it’s our youth who are leaving faster than almost anywhere else in the nation – at nearly double the national rate. This departure is not just a statistic; it represents the slow deterioration of our state’s future.

When our graduates and young professionals leave Wyoming to seek higher wages, greater opportunities or urban amenities, we lose more than labor – we lose innovation, leadership, and the next generation of families who would otherwise strengthen our communities. Without them, the cycle deepens: fewer workers, slower growth, and a state increasingly reliant on a shrinking economic base.

The Wyoming Business Council’s proposed investment in a critical minerals research laboratory is a forward-thinking step. It’s the kind of bold initiative that signals to young people that Wyoming is serious about creating sustainable, modern industries – industries that value their skills and promise a future right here at home. But it’s only one part of the solution.

We must also invest in education, technology, housing and local entrepreneurship. We must make sure that small towns thrive, that our rural broadband is reliable, and that young families can find affordable homes and meaningful careers without leaving the state they love.

Wyoming is a beautiful and safe place to raise a family, but beauty alone will not sustain us. To build a lasting future, we need to give our young people more reasons to stay – to see Wyoming not just as a place to grow up, but as a place to build a life. The future of our state depends on it.
