One person dead, two hospitalized after crash during WHP pursuit
CHEYENNE (WNE) — One person was killed and two others were hospitalized after a crash in Cheyenne last week.
On July 23, at approximately 11:12 p.m., a trooper with the Wyoming Highway Patrol witnessed a white Hyundai Ioniq 5 driving without taillights at night on Interstate 25. The trooper initiated a stop near College Drive, and the Ioniq took exit 7 and appeared to be prepared to stop.
The vehicle then continued on the off-ramp and turned right onto Clear Creek Parkway, and accelerated to flee, according to a WHP news release.
The Ioniq continued southbound on Clear Creek Parkway at speeds in excess of 100 mph, the release said. The vehicle then failed to navigate a sharp left turn and continued straight, exiting the roadway and becoming airborne. The vehicle then tripped and rolled multiple times before coming to rest in the parking lot of 6215 Clear Creek Parkway.
One of the passengers, identified as Christian Dawsey, 22, of Colorado, was completely ejected from the vehicle during the rollover and died at the scene. Dawsey was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. The driver was taken by helicopter to Colorado and hospitalized. A second passenger was taken by ground ambulance to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center and was hospitalized.
Speed and driver inattention are being considered contributing factors in the crash, the WHP release said. This is an active investigation, and further factors and charges are pending.
This crash marks the 76th fatality on Wyoming roadways in 2026, compared to 69 in 2025 and 54 in 2024.
