JOHNNIE (JOHN) J. DAUM
June 4, 1947–Aug. 10, 2026
Johnnie (John) J. Daum, a devoted educator, passionate speaker, and cherished family man, was called to eternal rest on Aug. 10, 2026, in the gentle embrace of Edgewood Vista memory care in Spearfish, South Dakota. Born on June 4, 1947, in Murdo, South Dakota, to the late John and Nancy Daum, John led a life rich in love, learning, and service.
A proud alumnus of Murdo High School, John graduated in 1965 before pursuing a bachelor’s in education at Black Hills State University in 1969. A few years later, he and Kathy would go on to receive their master’s in education from the University of Wyoming in 1975. While at Black Hills State University, he met his beloved wife, Katherine Buchanan, marrying her on his birthday, June 4, 1969, in Sturgis, South Dakota. The couple shared a deep bond for over five decades until Kathy’s passing in 2019. Together they nurtured a family that would grow to include their daughters, Denise (Ryland) Byrd and Lynette Daum, and their adored grandchildren, Micah and Olivia Byrd, who softened John’s once strict teacher demeanor into that of a doting grandfather.
John’s career as an educator began in 1969, teaching junior high/middle school American history and government in the Newcastle, Wyoming, school district for 28 years. He was not only a teacher but a mentor, coach, and role model. He also served as a middle school football and basketball coach, referee, and later as the middle school athletic director.
Upon taking early retirement, John embraced a new role that would take him around the world as an international director for Lions Club International. His dynamic presence and musical talents made him a sought-after motivational speaker. Because of his music background, he often incorporated music/solos into his speeches. Some of his favorite places he traveled to were Thailand, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Canada, and almost all 50 states.Â
Music was a thread that wove through John’s life, from singing solos with Kathy accompanying him, to supporting the BHSU music department and Friends of Music Committee.
In his retirement, John kept himself busy by working various jobs, from repairing windshields to driving buses, meter reading and working for Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel. His hands were never idle as he gardened, golfed, maintained his beautiful yard, and worked on woodworking projects. He was a born tour guide and loved to drive. Every summer he and Kathy would pack up their camper, take Denise and Lynette, and later their grandchildren, out on road trips. The family also spent as much time as they could at the cabin they built near Four Corners, Wyoming.Â
John’s life was one of service, not only to his students but also to his community. He was an active member in the First United Methodist Church in Newcastle and later the United Church of Christ in Spearfish, reflecting his deep faith and commitment to helping others. His leadership extended to roles within the Lions Club, Masons, senior housing committee, and local hospital board, always seeking to give back to his community.
John’s legacy is one of warmth, wisdom, and unwavering dedication. He leaves behind his daughters and grandchildren, his sister, Hilda M. Locke, and countless friends and former students whose lives he touched. His family finds solace in the belief that John is reunited with Kathy in Heaven, continuing their shared passion for music.
A celebration of John’s life will be held at the United Church of Christ in Spearfish on Aug. 28 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorials be directed to the Lion’s Club, honoring John’s spirit of giving and community service.
His family said, “Our family will forever miss Dad’s infectious enthusiasm and his impromptu history lessons. He had the gift of gab, and his stories will live on in our hearts, guiding us on our journeys as he did so lovingly in life.”
