Don’t just pay — play!
There will be plenty to do this weekend because organizers have been busy getting events together for the community to welcome those returning for the All-School Reunion in Newcastle.
The schedule on page B8 is jam-packed with activities, including music, school tours, a parade, silent auction – and don’t miss the reenactment of Teddy Roosevelt’s famous speech on the steps of the Antlers Building, as well as the Hanging of Diamond Slim in Railroad Park on Saturday at 8 p.m.
There is a way to support events and music in Newcastle and that is, simply put, to just show up. It takes a level of commitment in a smaller-sized community to support entertainment, live music and other events.
In Preslee Fitzwater’s NLJ June 19 student voice article “It takes a village,” she wrote a sentimental quote about community: “When playing a role in community support, you foster this deeper sense of connection, relationship and well-being.” By supporting such music and activities, the overall health of the community of Newcastle could improve noticeably.
People in the community often complain about the lack of entertainment in Newcastle, but real solutions to that problem are probably best found by asking, “What are we doing as a community to support entertainment?”
In my experience as a high schooler, I find that the community does an outstanding job in support of high school club fundraising. I am constantly asking the same people over and over again if they would like to donate to the specific club and their answer is always yes. Funding is often not an issue, but if we truly want the health of the community to improve, what we really need is to attend these events, and most importantly, have fun!
Come to the NHS All- School Reunion street dance on July 5 and other events scheduled over the weekend. And make sure to bring your dancing partner! Fast country dance songs will be played! Happy 4th!
