RIVERTON (WNE) — The Northern Arapaho Water and Sewer Department issued an advisory for Ethete water system users that water must be boiled for three minutes before drinking.

The advisory came after the Ethete water system lost pressure due to a clogged point of entry on the polymer hose, according to a statement.

“This led to a loss of pressure in the distribution system, which may cause back pressure, back siphonage, or a net movement of water from outside the pipe to the inside through cracks, breaks, or joints in the distribution system that are common in all water systems. Such a system failure carries with it a high potential that fecal contamination or other disease-causing organisms could enter the distribution system,” the statement read, warning of the potential for an “imminent and substantial health endangerment” situation for those using the system.

Water system users were advised to bring water to a rolling boil for at least three minutes, then let it cool before consuming, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice, the advisory stated.

Additionally, all stored water or recently made ice should be discarded, it said.

Those who experience persistent diarrhea, cramps, nausea or headaches should seek medical advice.

The polymer hose has now been replaced, and water system staff will notify residents when they may safely resume using water without the boiling protocol.
