EVANSTON (WNE) — The Beulah Fire has been blazing south of Evanston on the north slope of the Uinta Mountains in Summit County, Utah, near the Wyoming border.

Initially reported on Aug. 7, the wildfire has spread to more than 5,700 acres in a portion of the Uinta-WasatchCache National Forest that is difficult to access.

“It’s remote, rugged terrain out there,” said Bureau of Land Management Public Information Officer Andrea Good, who is camped on-site at the incident command post with the complex incident management team and fire crews. “It is difficult for the crews to access the fire-line perimeter due to the terrain and hazards, such as the standing dead trees.”

Despite its hard-to-reach location, about 618 personnel are currently working on the fire.

Good said the fire mitigation strategy centers on containing the perimeter while prioritizing firefighter safety and protecting values at risk.  She said crews are focusing their efforts on safeguarding areas such as the Christmas Meadows residences and the Hinckley Boy Scout Camp in Utah.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.  So far, it has remained confined to federal land, and no structures have been damaged.

Good explained that incident management teams work in a 14-day rotation, and another team has already been ordered to replace the current one when its assignment ends.

Air quality at the fire camp has been moderate, though smoke has been settling in Evanston. Good encouraged residents to monitor air quality reports.

At Bear River State Park in Evanston, one jogger said last week, “It (the smoke) is so thick I can taste it.”

Highway 150 remains open, but North Slope Road is closed.
