TORRINGTON (WNE) – The small town of Yoder, with a population of 128 as of July 2024, faces the potential loss of its only business as the current owner transitions from full-service operations to vending machines while searching for a buyer.
Craig Robbins, who purchased the convenience store September 3, 2024, announced plans to close the traditional retail operation and install vending machines to maintain limited service for the community.
The decision comes after nine months of operation in a town where economic challenges have made traditional retail difficult to sustain.
“I’d like to keep it going. It’s just I don’t have the time to,” Robbins said. “Our plan, we’re in the process of putting vending machines in so at least we can still – some stuff is going to be here for the community, but clearly not the same as having the kitchen open and the things you can’t sell in a vending machine.”
The store, currently listed for sale through 307 Realty, served as more than just a convenience store for the rural community. Robbins had intended to operate a kitchen providing lunch options for local workers, eliminating the need for residents to travel to larger towns for meals.
The business faced multiple challenges during Robbins’ ownership.
Oil industry fluctuations significantly impacted the customer base, particularly when Dietzler’s oil field operations reduced staffing due to falling oil prices. The store’s performance also depended heavily on seasonal factors. During summer months, residents typically visit Springer Reservoir just outside Yoder, bringing additional customers.
The planned vending machine operation will provide limited access to basic necessities while maintaining some community service. Robbins intends to keep the facility open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., operating similarly to a laundromat where customers can access services without staff present.
