AFTON (WNE) — The Willow Creek Fire, first reported on the morning of August 22, is now being reported to have grown to 4,355 acres. Located four miles southwest of Smoot, Wyoming, the fire ballooned from 250 acres to over 3,000 acres over the weekend.

The fire is being reported at 12% containment per the National Interagency Fire Center.

A total of 140 people are actively involved in battling the blaze which caused a temporary road closure of U.S. 89 on the evening of August 23.

An evacuation notice was given to residences in the Gomm’s Pond area, but that notice was dialed back to a ‘Set” designation on the afternoon of August 24.

That area as well as residents west of Highway 89 from Reeves-Schwab Lane south to Gomms Pond are being asked to remain in that ‘Set’ position and be prepared for a potential evacuation should the ‘Go’ order be given.

Cooler temperatures and rain in the forecast are expected to aid in the firefighting effort.
