What Would Mary Magdalene Say?

The following is a fictional account based on the biblical record of Mary Magdalene. The thoughts and words attributed to her are imagined, but the events and Scripture references are taken from the Bible.

Mary Magdalene appears several times in the Gospels. The Bible tells us that Jesus had cast seven demons out of her (Luke 8:2). Afterward, she followed Him and helped support His ministry. She remained near the cross when Jesus was crucified, and after His resurrection, she became one of the first people to see the risen Christ.

Scripture does not tell us everything Mary thought or felt. But knowing what the Bible does tell us about her, we can imagine what her testimony might have sounded like.

“I know what it is like to be trapped.

“I know what it is like to need a freedom you cannot give yourself.

“Seven demons had come out of me. Whatever my life had been before Jesus, everything changed when He set me free.

“After that, I followed Him.

“I listened to Him teach. I watched Him heal the sick. I saw Him show mercy to people others had pushed aside.

“Then I watched Him die.

“I stood near the cross while the One who had changed my life was crucified. Later, I went to the tomb while it was still dark. I thought He was gone.

“But the tomb was empty.

“Then He called my name.

‘Mary!’ (John 20:16)

“That was enough.

“I knew His voice.

“I had gone to the tomb grieving for a dead Savior. I left knowing that Jesus Christ was alive.

“I went to the disciples and told them, ‘I have seen the Lord!’ (John 20:18)

“If you believe you are too far gone for Christ, look at what He did for me.

“I could not free myself, but Jesus could.

“I could not change my past, but Jesus changed my future.

“And the same Christ who called my name still saves sinners today.”

Mary Magdalene’s story is not really about Mary Magdalene.

It is about Jesus.

He delivers. He forgives. He changes lives. He brings hope where there seemed to be none.

Jesus said, “The one who comes to Me I certainly will not cast out.” (John 6:37)

No matter what your past looks like, the question is not whether you can make yourself worthy of Christ.

You cannot.

The question is whether you will come to Him.
