National Newspaper Week is Oct. 4–10. As a weekly newspaper in Weston County, we understand the importance of our role as we strive to report the news accurately, inform and educate the public, and tell the stories of the people who live and work here. A lot happens in our community each week, and we do our best to cover as much as our small staff possibly can. The theme of National Newspaper Week is “Rooted in Community, Committed to Trust,” a theme we believe in and live by every day at the News Letter Journal.

We realize the importance of reporting not only on public meetings but also on the day-to-day happenings that unite us. Community members want to welcome new people to our town and also be informed about births, deaths, weddings, milestone birthdays and anniversaries — the events that keep us connected. As a community, investing in our youth and sharing in their achievements and activities matter. Coverage of crime, courts and legal notices helps to keep people aware of public services and public safety.

During this election year, the News Letter Journal published a primary election section to inform voters of their choices. We will also produce a special election section before the Nov. 3 General Election, when we will again ask candidates to respond to questions from the News Letter Journal.

Informed citizens understand how local, state and national governments work and help keep government accountable by asking the tough questions, such as how their tax dollars are being spent or not spent. Citizens who are actively involved help improve and strengthen a community.

All of this important work would not be possible without our faithful advertisers and loyal subscribers, and we thank you for your continued support of the News Letter Journal. We also encourage community members to participate in sharing news and photos. If you hear about a story idea, please let us know. If you would like to submit an article, column (opinion piece), or photos, please share them with us! Although we can’t guarantee your submission will end up in print, we certainly welcome submissions.

If you have any comments, concerns or ideas of how we can better serve this community, please contact any of the staff. We would like to hear from you.

We are “Rooted in Community, Committed to Trust.”
