Upton school year starts Aug. 18

School starts Aug. 18 for Weston County School District No. 7 students, according to Superintendent Clark Coberly.
Coberly told the News Letter Journal on Aug. 11 that the district anticipates a total of about 245 students this year: 117 elementary students, 49 middle school students and 79 high school students.
The volleyball and football athletics programs at both Upton High School and Upton Middle School will hold their first practices that day, he told the News Letter Journal. Golf practice started Aug. 12.
Registration for new students is ongoing at each school, and parents can stop by from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, he said.
“Registration is primarily for new students this week; however, new students to town will register when they arrive throughout the school year,” Coberly told the NLJ.
He said students who attended district schools in the 2024-25 school year are already registered.
According to the district’s website, weston7.org, Upton High School will hold an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 14 where families can meet teachers and visit classrooms. High school seniors must take banner photos between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Aug. 14 at the school.
The high school will hold an “It Takes a Village” community night from 6 to 7 p.m. Aug. 21, where parents, students and community members can gather “to cultivate a partnership benefiting students and the community,” according to the website. Parents and students are asked to share what they want students to learn, and community organizations should share opportunities and needs.
“Through the personalized learning model, the high school has flexibility to make learning relevant and a unique ability to introduce students to careers and post-secondary opportunities,” the event post says. “The hope is that through closer partnerships between the school and local entities, the more the community will benefit as a whole.”
Upton Elementary and Upton Middle School have an open house from 5 to 6 p.m. Aug. 18, according to the district’s online calendar. The open house will take place at the elementary/middle school building, and it offers students and their families an opportunity to meet their teachers, Coberly said.
The district is supplying all school supplies for students this year, apart from shoes for physical education classes and backpacks, according to a post on the website.
