Turning the World Upside Down

News Letter Journal - Staff Photo - Create Article
A clear look at how the early church changed the world without buildings, programs, money, or structure, relying only on prayer, the Word, obedience, and the Holy Spirit. A call for today’s church to return to what actually works.

They didn’t have what we think we need today. The early believers had no buildings. They met in homes. Acts says they gathered “from house to house.” They broke bread. They prayed. They taught. That was enough.

They didn’t have sound systems or stage lights. Peter stood up on the Day of Pentecost and preached without a microphone. The result was “about three thousand souls” being added that day (Acts 2:41). That happened through the Spirit, not technology.

They didn’t have committees or bylaws to vote on every move the church made. What they did have was the Spirit telling them where to go, what to preach, and when to move. The Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul” (Acts 13:2). No meeting. No debate. Just obedience.

They didn’t have formal programs. They didn’t need them. Prayer was their engine. Scripture was their foundation. Obedience was their lifestyle. The Holy Spirit was their power. Acts says they “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer” (Acts 2:42). That was the program.

They didn’t have money either. Peter told the lame man, “I do not possess silver and gold” (Acts 3:6). But he did have the authority of Christ, and that was enough to make a crippled man walk.

They didn’t have marketing teams or social media pages. But everywhere they went, the message spread because the Spirit pushed it forward. The critics in Thessalonica said the believers had “turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6).

That’s the point.

What the early church lacked never slowed them down. What they had changed the world.
Prayer. The Word. Obedience. The Holy Spirit.

Somehow, we traded those for buildings, programs, entertainment, and structure. We added everything except the one thing that mattered most.

If the church today wants to see the power the early church had, it needs to return to what the early church trusted:
 Christ alone.
 His Word.
 His Spirit.
 His mission.

Everything else is clutter.
