Test Yourself to See if You Are in the Faith
Many believe in God, but few truly follow Him. Discover why living spiritually minded takes effort, obedience, humility, and perseverance, and how the narrow road leads to life.
Paul wrote, “Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you fail the test?” (2 Corinthians 13:5). These words remind us that faith is not something to take lightly. Many claim to believe, but the real question is whether we are truly following Christ.
Jesus said, “For the gate is narrow and the way is constricted that leads to life, and there are few who find it” (Matthew 7:14). Those words are not just a warning, they are a reality. The majority of people will not choose the narrow way. They may believe in God, but few will actually follow Him. Believing can be comfortable. Following requires something more. It takes effort, dedication, and humility.
To live spiritually minded takes effort. It takes dedication and humility. A person has to be willing to admit they don’t have all the answers and submit to God’s Word. Pride says, “I know best.” Faith says, “God knows best.” Scripture says, “For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace” (Romans 8:6). To be spiritually minded means to put away the old way of thinking and to let the Spirit lead. This does not come naturally. It takes prayer, study of the Word, and a willingness to be corrected.
It also takes obedience. James wrote, “Just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead” (James 2:26). A faith that never moves into action is not alive. Too many people stop at belief. They confess with their lips but never let the truth change their walk. Real obedience is when God’s Word shapes decisions, habits, and attitudes. That is what separates living faith from empty words.
True faith requires perseverance. Following Christ is not a one-time decision but a lifetime walk. Jesus said we must deny ourselves daily and take up the cross. Paul echoed this when he wrote, “Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses” (1 Timothy 6:12). Faith is a fight. It is a battle against sin, temptation, and the pull of this present world. Perseverance means getting back up when you fall, keeping your eyes on Christ, and refusing to turn back. Scripture reminds us, “For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised” (Hebrews 10:36).
So why are there so few spiritually minded people who really exercise their faith in truth? Because it costs something. It costs pride, comfort, and the easy way of life. But what is gained is far greater than what is lost. Eternal life, peace with God, and the joy of His presence belong to those who walk the narrow road with Him. “For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it” (Matthew 7:14).
