PINEDALE (WNE) — Five days after a shooting that left a Sublette County man dead in the alley between a physical therapy clinic and a popular restaurant on Pine Street, local officials remain tight-lipped.

Paul Clyde Browning, 67, died from a single gunshot wound to the chest on the afternoon of Friday, July 11.

Sublette County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene following a report of a shooting. As people converged in Pinedale for the 89th Annual Green River Rendezvous, multiple police vehicles blocked off the alleyway between Winds Therapy, a physical and occupational therapy clinic, and The Patio Grill Mexican restaurant, on the north side of Pinedale’s main street, where the shooting had taken place.

As of press time on Wednesday, July 16, Sublette County Sheriff’s Deputy Lt. Travis Bingham had no update, nor did Sublette County Prosecutor Clayton Melinkovich.

Sublette County Coroner Curt Covill confirmed Saturday morning that Browning died of a single gunshot wound to the chest and ruled the death a homicide.

“There was an eyewitness. There was the shooter’s testimony,” said Covill. “There was no doubt what happened, so yeah, of course, ‘homicide’ (is my ruling).”

He declined to provide details on the weapon used in the shooting, stating only that it was“a handgun.

At the time of this report, no charges have been filed against the shooter.

Bingham said in a press release Friday afternoon that one suspect, whose name he declined to release, had been detained and “there is no threat to public safety at this time.”

At some point over the weekend, the shooter was released, although Bingham would not say for how long the man was detained.
