Snow squall causes I-80 pileup northwest of Laramie

LARAMIE (WNE) — Shortly after 3:10 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, Wyoming Highway Patrol Dispatch began receiving reports of several crashes on westbound Interstate 80 between mile markers 274 and 273 in the Arlington/Cooper Cove area northwest of Laramie.

WHP troopers arrived on scene and found two large crashes and four smaller incidents during a snow squall that came through the area. 

For the two large crashes, one involved 16 vehicles the other involved seven vehicles, according to a Wyoming Highway Patrol Facebook post. The four smaller crashes each involved two vehicles. In all, 40 vehicles were involved.

Three people were transported to hospitals for treatment, and all injuries were reported as minor. First responders from Carbon and Albany counties assisted in the response.

Conditions at the time of the crash report reported as icy with whiteout visibility. Clean-up of the interstate continued through the night with rolling closures taking place for the westbound lanes as far east as Cheyenne. 

Those lanes were reopened at about 7 a.m. Wednesday morning. 

The WHP reminded travelers to be aware of the surroundings, never drive faster than conditions allow and be prepared for quick changes in weather and visibility such as sudden snow squalls.
