Skier hospitalized after Teton Pass avalanche burial
JACKSON (WNE) — A 28-year-old Jackson man was transported to St. John’s Health after a backcountry avalanche Saturday on Teton Pass.
The man was fully buried in an area known to backcountry skiers and snowboarders as “the Claw” on the south side of Teton Pass, according to Teton County Sheriff Matt Carr.
The man was skiing with a partner at the time of the slide, Carr said. That partner located and excavated the injured skier before rescuers arrived.
Emergency crews received the call at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation closed Teton Pass in both directions while Teton County Search and Rescue used a helicopter to retrieve the skier.
He was then transported by ground ambulance to St. John’s Health, Carr said. The Jackson Hole Daily was not able to confirm his name, or condition, by press time Sunday.
It was also unclear whether the skier is still at St. John’s, or elsewhere.
The Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center is still investigating the incident.
