Simon the Sorcerer (part 1)

In Acts 8, we encounter the story of a man named Simon, a sorcerer from the city of Samaria who was known for his magical powers. Simon had gained a great following, and the people of Samaria referred to him as “the Great Power of God” (Acts 8:10). For a long time, Simon amazed the people with his sorcery, and they believed him to be a figure of divine power. But when Philip, one of the early disciples, came to Samaria preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, many of the Samaritans, including Simon, believed and were baptized.

At first glance, it seems like Simon’s story is one of redemption. He believed in the gospel, was baptized, and began following Philip, amazed by the miracles and signs that were being performed. However, something deeper was going on beneath the surface that would soon be revealed. While Simon appeared to make a profession of faith, there was more to his belief than a true heart transformation. This belief, at least initially, seems to have been based more on the power he witnessed than on a personal commitment to Christ.

Simon’s belief was more intellectual than genuine. It’s important to note that even Satan and demons acknowledge the truth about God. As James 2:19 reminds us, “You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe—and shudder.” The difference, however, between demons’ belief and saving faith is that demons do not surrender to God in repentance and humility. Their belief does not lead to a change of heart or actions. Similarly, Simon believed in Jesus, but his belief did not appear to lead to a genuine heart transformation. Instead, his motives seemed to remain rooted in his former life of power and influence.

While Jesus frequently emphasizes the importance of belief in the Gospel, particularly in the book of John, the belief He refers to goes beyond mere intellectual acknowledgment. Jesus calls for a faith that involves trust, surrender, and a personal relationship with Him—one that leads to a transformed life. In John 3:16, for example, belief in Christ is connected to eternal life, not just understanding who He is, but accepting Him as Lord and Savior. The belief Simon had was not the kind that Jesus spoke of; it was more a fascination with power and signs, rather than a deep, life-changing commitment to follow Jesus and allow His Spirit to renew and reshape his heart. Simon’s faith was shallow, motivated by a desire for control and recognition, not by a willingness to surrender to Christ.

As the story progresses, Simon's true heart begins to show. After Peter and John arrived from Jerusalem to pray for the new believers to receive the Holy Spirit, Simon saw the power they had to impart the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands. Immediately, his old desires surfaced. Simon, still focused on maintaining his reputation and influence, offered the apostles money in exchange for the same ability to lay hands on people and give them the Holy Spirit. "Give this authority to me as well," Simon said, "so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit" (Acts 8:19).

Here, Simon's response reveals that his belief was not rooted in a desire to serve God or to glorify His name. Instead, Simon was seeking to control the Holy Spirit’s power for his own gain. He wanted to use this newfound power to increase his influence over the people, much like he had done with his sorcery. He thought of the gifts of God as something that could be bought or manipulated. This shows that Simon's heart was still in the grip of pride and self-interest. (to be continued)
