Search & rescue locates hunter missing south of Deer Creek

GLENROCK (WNE) — An overdue hunter reported missing on the night of Sept. 5 south of Deer Creek Road was located by the Converse County Search & Rescue team, according to Converse County Undersheriff Chris Walsh. 

Because the rescue was a medical emergency, the name of the hunter was not released by the Converse County Sheriff’s Office. 

The sheriff’s office was alerted to the missing hunter, last known to be on the mountain south of the far end of Deer Creek Road. According to CCSO officials, concerned friends reported him overdue, prompting an immediate response. Deputies met with those friends, deployed a drone and began a coordinated search in the rugged, remote terrain. 

The Converse County Search & Rescue team used specialized off-road vehicles to navigate the challenging landscape. 

Approximately three hours after the initial report, SAR volunteers located the hunter, who had fallen down a steep slope. The hunter had suffered multiple injuries and hypothermia, officials reported. 

SAR members and Memorial Hospital of Converse County EMS provided critical on-site care, stabilizing the hunter for transport, CCSO officials said. 

“With all Wyoming Life Flight helicopters engaged in other emergencies, a medical evacuation helicopter was secured from South Dakota to airlift the hunter to a medical facility,” CCSO noted in its official statement. 

On Sept. 8, Walsh said, “(The unnamed victim) is still in the hospital from the last report I received.”
