Report details fatal vehicle-livestock accident

SHERIDAN (WNE) — A vehicle-livestock collision resulted in the death of one Sheridan County resident, according to an official accident report released by the Wyoming Highway Patrol on Dec. 30.

According to the report, on Sept. 6, at approximately 9:59 p.m. there was a bull reported to be outside of the pasture and in the highway right of way at mile marker 3 on Wyoming Highway 338.

A responding trooper arrived on scene around 10:30 p.m. with activated overhead lights and attempted to get the bull off of the roadway. According to the report, the bull was very aggressive and dangerous, so the responding trooper was having a difficult time dealing with it. 

While attempting to corral the bull, a passerby stopped and was angry with the trooper for having his overhead lights on on his patrol car. The passerby claimed the lights were too bright and could cause a crash. The passerby then left the scene and the trooper deactivated his overhead lights.

A white Honda Accord, driven by 18-year-old Laylie Laumbach, was westbound on Wyoming Highway 338 and approaching mile marker 3 as the bull was standing in the westbound lane. Unable to stop, the white Honda struck the bull. 

The Honda traveled off of the roadway, into the borrow pit, and went through the right of way fence before coming to rest in the pasture on the west side of the roadway.

Laumbach was removed from the vehicle and the trooper was able to restore her breathing and ensure she had a pulse until an ambulance arrived on scene to transport her to Sheridan Memorial Hospital.

On the morning of Sept. 7, Laumbach was flown to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings, Montana. On Sept. 8 at 7:25 a.m. Laumbach was pronounced deceased by hospital staff.

According to the Sheridan County Coroner, the cause of death was blunt force trauma.

According to Laumbach’s parents, on the night of the crash, Laumbach was traveling to a friend’s house to spend the night when the crash occurred. The bull died from the collision.
