LYMAN (WNE) — The Wyoming Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that left a 22-year-old Mountain View man dead.

According to a press release issued by the WHP on Wednesday, Feb. 25, Caleb Gooding died at the scene after investigators say his vehicle hit the back of a semi-truck around 2:40 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21.

The crash occurred on westbound I-80 near milepost 31, roughly 11 miles west of Lyman.

“Troopers found that a 2023 Freightliner semi-truck was westbound on I-80 in the right-hand lane,” the release states. “A 2025 Toyota GR Corolla hatchback was approaching behind it. The driver side of the Toyota struck the passenger side of the Freightliner trailer, and the Toyota skidded along the rear portion of the trailer before leaving the roadway to the right.”

The Freightliner driver was not injured. Driver inattention and speed are believed to be the primary cause in this crash, according to the release.

This crash brings the total deaths on Wyoming roadways to 19 in 2026, compared to 13 in 2025, and 9 in 2024.
