Moose killed by bus is the 3rd dead this month on Moose-Wilson Road

JACKSON (WNE) — Marcy Perry is tired of it.

This summer, the West Bank resident has been documenting moose deaths along Highway 390, which winds past suburbs and country clubs as it connects Wilson and Teton Village. She’s counted five fatal wildlife-vehicle collisions in the past three months. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has tallied three in the past month alone, including the crash Monday morning involving a START bus and a mature bull moose.

The bus was damaged. The bull landed on a pathway next to the highway and died.

“I’m tempted to print pictures of the dead moose and put them up and down the bike path,” Perry said.

The Monday accident happened between 6 and 7 a.m. near Sidewinders’ West Bank location and the southern exit from Teton Pines.

It left the front of the START bus badly damaged with a broken window and a busted frame. The bus was, however, operable, as someone drove it back to the bus barn after the accident. The moose, a mature bull, was picked up by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Someone was later able to salvage the meat via the state’s 511 app, which permits people to scavenge roadkill.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol investigated the incident and found that the driver was travelling the speed limit, 35 mph at night and 45 mph during the day.

The bus had three passengers, including the driver, but nobody was injured, according to Highway Patrol Officer Arron Healy.
