When workers do not secure the load to the pallet itself, the film may hold the boxes together while the entire stack shifts away from the wood or plastic base. That creates trouble during forklift handling, truck movement, and unloading.

The base matters because it connects the product to the platform that carries it. Without that connection, the pallet becomes two separate things: the load and the skid. Once those move independently, even a carefully wrapped stack can slide, lean, or spill.

Mistake #3: Using Too Much Film

Another mistake to avoid in stretch film application is overwrapping and using up too much film. More film can feel reassuring, especially when the load contains valuable products. But overwrapping wastes material, hides labels, slows down work, and can make receiving crews fight through layers before they can inspect the shipment.

A better approach focuses on using the right amount of film in the right places. That may include adjusting tension, improving overlap, choosing film that matches the load, or correcting a weak wrapping pattern. The best tension is steady tension. Workers should maintain a consistent pull, keep the film roll at a consistent distance from the load, and avoid sudden jerks around corners. When using a machine, teams should review settings rather than assuming yesterday’s setup fits today’s pallet.

Safety also belongs in this conversation. Manual material handling can create ergonomic strain when employees bend, twist, pull, and walk around loads repeatedly. Better wrapping practices can support both product stability and worker comfort.

Every pallet has a loose end somewhere. A loose film tail can catch on nearby pallets, forklift parts, dock plates, rack edges, or truck interiors. Once it catches, it may unwind the load or tear away a section that held everything together.

Film tails also make a shipment look sloppy. That may sound minor, but presentation matters when a customer receives damaged wrap, dragging plastic, or a pallet that looks rushed. A clean finish tells the receiver that the shipper cared about the load from start to finish.

A secure finish does not require drama. Workers can wipe the tail flat against the wrapped surface, tuck it into a stable film layer, or use approved methods that keep it from dangling. They should avoid leaving long strips loose or tying knots that create lumps and snags.

This final check should become part of the routine. Before a pallet leaves the wrapping area, someone should look at the base, the top, the corners, the labels, and the tail. That quick inspection can catch small issues before they turn into costly ones.
