Lou Taubert Ranch Outfitters named to prestigious New York Times list

CASPER (WNE) — Lou Taubert Ranch Outfitters, the Casper institution that has been a mainstay of the city’s downtown for decades, is one of America’s top 50 clothing stores, according to The New York Times.

The business is run by six Taubert siblings — Anita, Carlene, Frieda, Louis Jr., Robert and Kurt,  all children of the namesake Lou — who are third-generation Wyomingites.

The four floors open to shoppers feature everything from children’s toys and outfits, boots and hats, western suits and denim to saddles and other tack.

“This is a special honor,” Anita Taubert said. “We are very grateful.”

“That’s a feat we just don’t take lightly,” her brother, Louis Taubert Jr, added.

Though Lou Taubert Ranch Outfitters isn’t the only Western store to be featured in the list, it was the only business from Wyoming that made the cut.

Taubert Jr. said he caught wind of the store making The New York Times list through a phone call with a California-based vendor who offered congratulations.

Taubert Jr. and Anita Taubert each said they’ve been congratulated by shoppers and other vendors in the time since.

The duo attributed their business’s success to several factors but especially credited how they source their products from primarily American vendors.

They credit their emphasis on quality products for the listing, in addition to the smell of leather, creak of the wooden floors and lack of computerized checkout — as all sales are rung up on mechanical cash registers that have been with the business’s flagship 2nd Street location for decades — all of which attest to the store’s age and add to its ambiance.
