JUDGED BY CHRIST, NOT CONDEMNED

John 5:24 is one of the clearest statements Jesus ever made about salvation, yet it is often misunderstood.

“Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.” (John 5:24)

Notice the order of what Jesus says. First comes hearing His word. That is more than letting sound pass through the ears. It means hearing the truth of Christ and taking it seriously. Scripture shows that true faith comes by hearing the message God has given. “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17)

Jesus also said, “He who is of God hears the words of God.” (John 8:47) Then comes believing Him who sent Christ. That is faith in the Father and in the Son whom He sent into the world. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

Jesus then makes three statements about the person who believes.

First, that person has eternal life. He does not say he might have it, or will one day receive it if he manages to hold on long enough. He says has it now. Eternal life begins the moment a person truly believes. Jesus said the same thing again in John 3:36. “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.” (John 3:36)

Eternal life is not something delayed until the grave or postponed until the resurrection. It is the present possession of the one who believes. John later wrote, “And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has the life.” (1 John 5:11–12)

Second, that person does not come into judgment. This is where many people misunderstand the verse. Some read it as if believers will never stand before Christ at all. That is not what Jesus is saying. The word here speaks of condemnation. The believer will never face the judgment that decides eternal destiny. That question has already been settled through faith in Christ. Romans 8:1 says it plainly. “Therefore there is now no condemnation at all for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1)

However, that does not mean believers will never stand before Christ in any sense. Scripture clearly says they will. “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.” (2 Corinthians 5:10)

This is not a judgment to determine salvation. That issue has already been settled by faith in Christ. The judgment seat of Christ is where the works of believers are evaluated, not where their eternal destiny is decided. Salvation rests entirely on Christ and His finished work, not on human effort.

Third, Jesus says the believer has passed out of death into life. Notice the tense. It is already done. The believer once stood in spiritual death, separated from God, but through faith has crossed over into life. Scripture says, “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins.” (Ephesians 2:1)

Judged by Christ, Not Condemned

But God did not leave us there. “But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our wrongdoings, made us alive together with Christ.” (Ephesians 2:4–5) The same truth appears in Colossians. “For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son.” (Colossians 1:13)

The believer is not still standing on the border waiting to see what happens. He has already been brought over from death into life.

This verse leaves no room for the idea that salvation is uncertain or still waiting to be decided. According to Jesus, the believer already possesses eternal life, already stands free from condemnation, and already has crossed from death to life. That is why Scripture can say with confidence, “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1)

That is the certainty Christ gives to those who hear His word and believe the One who sent Him. It is not a weak hope. It is not a religious wish. It is the promise of the Son of God. And He does not lie.
