Humans are complicated
The older I get, the more I see it. I have watched people do things that make you stop and shake your head, and I have watched the same kind of people turn around and do something kind, something generous, something that restores your faith for a moment. It does not always make sense. The same person can be both.
We are gifted. There is no denying that. People build things that last, create things that move others, solve problems that once seemed impossible. At the same time, we are broken. We take what is good and find a way to twist it. We damage what we should protect. We ignore what matters most.
I have seen people stand up for others with courage, and I have seen people stay silent when it would have cost them something to speak. I have seen kindness that asks for nothing in return, and I have seen selfishness that takes without a second thought. It all exists in the same world, often in the same person.
Humans can build hospitals, and humans can build places meant to destroy. We can feed strangers and still ignore our own souls. We can talk about truth and still lie to ourselves when it suits us. There is real beauty. in people, but there is also something bent in us that we cannot seem to straighten out on our own.
We reach for meaning. We want justice. We want love. We want something that lasts. Yet at the same time, we sabotage ourselves. We choose what is easy over what is right. We call things good that are not, and we ignore what we know is true.
So I do not see people as basically good, and I do not see them as worthless either. I see something else. I see people as deeply valuable, and at the same time deeply flawed. Capable of tenderness and capable of harm. Able to create and able to destroy.
If I had to put it in one line, this is how I would say it: There is something noble in us, and at the same time something broken. But we move on just the same, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.
I have seen enough to believe this. People can change. I have watched it happen. Not all at once, and not without struggle, but it happens. That alone is reason not to give up on people, or on ourselves.
