WORLAND (WNE) — Unlike last year, homeowners who wish to take advantage of the Homeowners Tax Exemption (also referred to as the 25% Exemption) must apply for it. The application deadline has just been extended from Feb. 1 to March 1.

As of Friday, Jan 16, Washakie County Deputy Assessor Nancy Quinn said only 503 Washakie County residents have applied for the exemption.

Quinn said the application can be filled out online by visiting ptd.wyo.gov/OWN- EROCC or by stopping by the assessor’s office. The process takes around two minutes, and the only thing people need to provide is their name.

In order to qualify for this exemption, homeowners must reside in the home eight months of the year, and it cannot be a rental or commercial property.

Quinn said, “Last year, everyone in the state of Wyoming got the homeowners exemption and that included rentals, VRBOs and Airbnbs. Well, this year, none of those would qualify because they would have to live in it eight months out of the year.”

She added that there is a bill on the ballot trying to eliminate the eight-month qualification for residents, but currently, the eight-month rule applies.

She said more people in Washakie County than any other county in the state chose to opt out of the exemption in 2025.

“I had people say ‘thank you, but no.’ They wanted to make certain that we had funding for the special districts,” said Quinn.

The deadline for the other exemptions, the Long-Term Homeowners Exemption and the Veterans Exemption is on Monday, May 25, which happens to be Memorial Day, so county offices will be closed. Those wishing to apply for either of those exemptions are encouraged to do so by Friday, May 22.
