SUNDANCE (WNE) — A failed attempt to pass led to a head-on collision last week that claimed the lives of three people.

Jonathan Vought, 29, of New York; Eugene Cadwell, 73, of Montana; and Rebecca Cadwell, 52, of Montana were killed in the incident.

According to the Wyoming Department of Transportation, the accident took place on December 9 just before noon. One vehicle was traveling westbound near milepost 16 of Hwy 212, while the other was traveling eastbound.

The first vehicle merged into the east-bound lane with the intention of overtaking an unknown passenger vehicle. The first vehicle collided head-on with the second, with both coming to an uncontrolled rest in the south borrow ditch.

Road conditions at the time were wet, and the weather was cloudy with severe wind. All three victims were wearing seatbelts.

Speed and driver inattention are believed to have been contributing factors.
