Grass fire burned more than 2,500 acres west of Wright
GILLETTE (WNE) — Monday afternoon, the first big fire of the year hit southern Campbell County.
At 12:43 p.m., the Campbell County Fire Department responded to a grass fire west of Wright, both north and south of Highway 387.
Named the Porcupine Creek Fire, it was contained to 2,542 acres and was caused by a downed power line.
Highway 387 between Highway 50 and Highway 59 was shut down for a few hours while crews fought the fire.
The Town of Wright was placed in SET status, which means:
- Be prepared for possible evacuation
- Gather important items, medications, and documents
- Make a plan for pets and livestock
- Stay alert for further updates or evacuation notices
It was later taken out of this status once the fire was under control. No structures were lost.
Firefighters were assisted by Campbell County Road and Bridge, Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, Wyoming Highway Patrol, WYDOT, the Town of Wright, the Bureau of Land Management and the United States Forest Service.
Additionally, a number of private companies provided help and equipment to help firefighters slow the spread of the fire, including Performance Industries, Bridger Pipeline, TCRI, Loen Bros, EOG Resources and Dan Hart Patrol, according to a Facebook post by the fire department.
