WORLAND — An increase in poverty levels means more federal grant funding for Worland schools.

During a presentation at the Washakie County School District No. 1 Board meeting Monday night, Assistant Superintendent Jody Rakness compared the district’s appropriations from federal grants this school year to those of last year, noting an overall increase to funds available to the district through grants.

“There is a significant increase in Title I funds. It was such an increase I actually called the state to ask about it,” she said. “The difference from last year to this year was $455,000 to $613,000. That’s an incredible difference … This is based on poverty rates according to census data, and the poverty rate in Washakie County and Worland has increased significantly, and that brings in additional Title I dollars. I think that speaks to the level of poverty that we’re seeing in our community.”

Regarding Title II and Title IV funds, Rakness said that despite uncertainty this summer due to disruptions in the Department of Education, the funds will be disbursed.

Between the two grants, the Worland district will experience an increase of about $193,000 from last year.

“That will primarily benefit professional development, something we really held off on last year because our budget was tight. It’s one of those pieces that’s really critical and we will be in much better shape this year to carry that forward,” Rakness stated.

After disclosing slight changes to several other grants that will largely go unnoticed compared to last year, Rakness added, “Grantwise, we are in good, solid shape.”
