ROCK SPRINGS (WNE) — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has provided an update of the test results on the doves that were found deceased in Rock Springs.

According to Regina Dickson, WGFD Information and Education Specialist, both doves submitted from the “tree streets” area of Rock Springs have tested positive for Avian Paramyxovirus.

Dickson said the agency recommends taking down any backyard feeders, disinfecting them well with diluted bleach solution, and leaving those down for a month.

“This virus should only affect pigeon/ dove species,” Dickson said. “If folks are seeing other species dying in numbers, three or more, should notify the Game and Fish.”

Dickson added that if homeowners are concerned about livestock or pets, they should contact their veterinarian.

Dickson shared some tips about bird feeder maintenance since bird baths and bird feeders can lead to unintended consequences. Birds congregating at feeders have more contact with each other and therefore, are more likely to spread diseases to each other through saliva, feces, and other close interactions. Bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses can be spread between birds at bird feeders and bird baths. A few examples of such diseases are Salmonellosis, Aspergillosis, and Trichomoniasis.

Some diseases carried by birds can be spread to humans and other animals (such as cats and dogs). People are advised to  wear gloves when handling birds and their feeders and baths, wash their hands and arms afterward and remove dead birds from their property to discourage pets from consuming the carcasses.

Anyone who finds a sick or dead bird near their feeder needs to take note of the date and type of bird (if known) and keep an eye out for any more sick or dead birds. Wyoming Game and Fish urges those who find three or more dead birds to call its regional office.
