Flu cases hit record highs as winter illness spreads across nation

TORRINGTON (WNE) — Flu cases are rising sharply across the country, and health officials say communities could continue to see increased illness in the weeks ahead, with health systems already reporting record-breaking flu numbers.

The CDC estimates there have been at least 7.5 million illnesses, 81,000 hospitalizations and 3,100 deaths from flu so far this season, with at least eight children having died from flu.

More than half of the country is now experiencing elevated flu activity, with the CDC reporting 32 states and jurisdictions reporting “high” or “very high” levels of flu spread– nearly double the number from the previous week.

Several state health departments are already reporting record-breaking flu numbers. 

The surge comes as communities gather during winter holidays and as a dominant flu strain circulates widely across the nation. 

Influenza A(H3N2) viruses are the most commonly reported, with experts expressing concern that the current flu vaccine may not be a good match for the dominant variant circulating – subclade K – but noting the vaccine will still protect against serious illness.

Health officials urge individuals to take preventive measures against respiratory illness. The CDC said flu activity is expected to continue for several weeks, with experts generally anticipating flu cases will most likely peak in January or February, surging after winter travel and holiday gatherings.

Antiviral medications remain available for those who contract the flu. The most common antiviral is oseltamivir, the generic version of Tamiflu, available as a pill or liquid suspension and approved by the Food and Drug Administration for early treatment of flu for adults, children and babies as young as 14 days old.

The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older who has not yet been vaccinated this season get an annual influenza vaccine.
