Douglas man sentenced to 16-28 years for vehicular homicide

DOUGLAS (WNE) — After pleading guilty to aggravated homicide by vehicle and two other DUI-related felonies in February, Wesley B. Kersey of Douglas was sentenced to 16-28 years in prison late last month.
District Court Judge Scott F. Peasley on May 27 sentenced Kersey to 8-12 years for aggravated homicide by vehicle while DUI and 4-8 years for two counts of DUI and causing serious bodily injury.
Kersey was also ordered to pay $5,262 to the Wyoming Division of Victim Services along with $150 to the Wyoming Victims Compensation Fund along with standard court fees.
Kersey, who was born in 1980, was arrested last June after he collided with another vehicle, resulting in the death of 14-year-old Mackenzie Blessinger and the hospitalization of the girl’s mother, Justine Crouch and brother, Barry Crouch, who was 6 when the accident occurred.
Though he initially pleaded not guilty to multiple DUI-related felonies at his initial hearing, Kersey reached a plea bargain with prosecutors in February in which they dropped four additional charges which law enforcement had alleged Kersey committed the same day.
Kersey had entered this under a cold plea provision, meaning there was no agreement between his attorney and the court on a punishment and Peasley ultimately imposed the sentence.
Kersey had faced up to 20 years for his conviction on the aggravated vehicular homicide charge and 10 years for both counts of causing serious bodily injury.
His three prison sentences are running consecutively, meaning Kersey will serve them back-to-back. He was given credit for 339 days of presentence confinement toward his 8-12 year prison sentence for his most serious offense.
Peasley also recommended he be placed in the Intensive Treatment Unit, which refers to a Wyoming Department of Corrections program designed for substance abuse treatment.
