The curious case of missing meteorite lands near Wright

DOUGLAS (WNE) — Just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, residents in and out of the state reported a bright green streak of light in the sky, and many Douglas residents took to social media to report a window-rattling bang across the city. 

Facebook posts from Douglas residents reported feeling an impact from Antelope Road to Z-Lazy-Y road, feeling a boom strong enough to rattle windows. 

At least one Converse Sheriff’s deputy went looking for the source of the boom but didn’t find it, according to Dalgarn. According to Converse County Emergency Management Coordinator Russ Dalgarn, nobody has found what was believed to have been a meteorite.

The American Meteor Society received 38 reports about the meteor. It was seen in parts of Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. Several videos of the event were captured and posted on Facebook. 

The AMS trajectory was primarily over Wyoming before probably disintegrating near Wright. The National Weather Service in Riverton told Oil City News that the sighting could have been a meteor burning as it traveled through Earth’s atmosphere but even it could not confirm its existence.
