Cowboy comes to LPD’s rescue

LANDER (WNE) – The Fremont County DUI Task Force felt a bit of Western flair over the New Year after a bystander assisted officers in apprehending a suspect using a lasso in the wee hours of the night.

Officers on patrol on New Year’s Eve attempted to stop a suspected impaired driver in Riverton at around 11 p.m. When the driver reportedly didn’t stop, a pursuit ensued, ending when the suspect fled his vehicle and attempted to escape on foot. 

An officer in the chase “was momentarily sidelined after an unexpected encounter with playground equipment – proving once again that swingsets remain undefeated in low-light conditions,” the Riverton Police Department wrote of the incident. 

As that officer, who suffered minor injuries, was delayed at the playground, a civilian bystander jumped into action and grabbed a rope, then sent it flying. He lassoed the suspect, then safely restrained him until officers arrived, according to the RPD.

The officer injured on the playground was evaluated and released. No one else was reportedly injured, “and the swingset has been cleared of suspicion,” the RPD wrote.

“Law enforcement officials commend the civilian for their assistance while reminding the public that the safest way to help is to be a good witness and follow officers’ directions,” the RPD said. “While lasso skills are not required, they are apparently not discouraged.” 

The RPD added that the suspect is facing charges related to impaired driving and the investigation is ongoing.
