Cheyenne man arrested following fatal motorcycle crash Wednesday
CHEYENNE (WNE) — A local man has been arrested on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, driving under the influence and failure to yield while turning left after a crash that killed an unidentified motorcyclist.
Oliver Birt, 29, was arrested following a crash involving a motorcycle at approximately 4:25 p.m. Wednesday, according to Cheyenne Police Department Public Information Officer Alex Farkas.
Officers were dispatched to the crash near the intersection of East Lincolnway and Western Way. The motorcycle rider, a 69-year-old man, suffered life-threatening injuries at the scene. He was transported to the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased. Preliminary details indicate that Birt, driving a white pickup truck, was attempting to make a left turn onto Western Way and collided with the 69-year-old on a blue Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling down Lincolnway from the opposite direction.
Birt was under the influence at the time of the accident, and the suspected substance was alcohol, according to Farkas.
Birt was arrested and booked into the Laramie County jail for felony aggravated vehicular homicide (driving under the influence) and misdemeanor failure to yield while turning left.
Due to the severity of the crash, the Cheyenne Police Department’s Major Crash Unit responded to take over the investigation.
The Laramie County Coroner will identify the victim and notify the next of kin, according to a news release.
