CAROL J. WEISS

June 4, 1947–June 27, 2026

Carol Jean (Nelson) Weiss, 79, of Rapid City, South Dakota, passed away June 27, 2026. 

Carol was born June 4, 1947, in the Lutheran Hospital in Hot Springs, South Dakota, to Vannice and Katy (Marty) Nelson. She grew up on a ranch in Minnekahta Valley and graduated from Hot Springs High School. She married Richard Weiss June 27, 1965.

Carol loved ranching and cows. She belonged to book clubs, knitting clubs and the Lutheran church. She enjoyed writing verses at church. She was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at a young age. Carol spent the last few years living in Rapid City and loved hanging out with family and friends.

Carol had a teaching degree through the State of Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards where she substituted at the Sheridan College in Sheridan, Wyoming.

Carol is preceded in death by her husband, Richard “Dick” Weiss; her parents; son, Terry Weiss; sister, Ardys; and brothers, Marty and Victor ‘Ole’ Nelson.

Surviving Carol are her children, Michelle (Scott) Garhart of Newcastle, Wyoming; Kathy (Byran) Bettcher of Sheridan, Wyoming; grandchildren, Katie (Shane) Wolf, Travis (Kaycie) Garhart, Kory (Emily) Bettcher;, Brooke (Trevor) Bettcher; great-grandchildren, Trenten Wolf, Walker Wolf, and Blake Bettcher.

Arrangements are in the care of Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home. Committal service will be held 1 p.m., Thursday, July 2, at Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs.
