BRUCE JOHN HAMILTON: March 15, 1950–Aug. 21, 2026
Bruce John Hamilton, age 76, took his final ride and passed away peacefully on Aug. 21, 2026, at his home in Augusta, Montana.
Born on March 15, 1950, in South Dakota, Bruce was the beloved son of Earl and Doris Hamilton. He grew up in Newcastle, Wyoming, graduating from Newcastle High School before attending the University of Wyoming.
Bruce was a man of many hats — literally and figuratively. Over his 76 years, he worked as a guest ranch manager, welder, heavy equipment operator, store owner, and volunteer firefighter. But the hat that fit him best was his cowboy hat. His true passion was ranching; from his childhood on the dirt outside of Newcastle until his very last days, Bruce ensured that cattle were never far from his front door.
While Bruce boasted a tough exterior, anyone close to him knew it was a front — underneath lay a heart of gold. He was a soft touch for anyone down on their luck and was always the first to quietly lend a helping hand, a piece of equipment, or a second chance. When he wasn’t tending to cattle or helping a neighbor, Bruce was a lifelong treasure hunter. Whether he was fishing, hunting, or digging in the dirt, he had a knack for finding pieces of history. He amassed a legendary collection of everything from gold and ancient arrowheads to actual dinosaur bones. Visitors to Bruce’s home were guaranteed a personal museum tour, complete with colorful stories about the history of every single piece he unearthed.
After much consideration, Bruce made the decision to sell his beloved Beaver Creek ranch in Newcastle and move to Montana to be closer to his son, Casey, daughter-in-law, Sharlee, and his grandkids. He spent his final year doing exactly what he loved: cheering at sporting events, enjoying family barbecues, and helping work cattle on the Montana ranch. He also managed to squeeze in one last epic fishing trip with Casey and his grandson, Treyson. Bruce was a skilled outdoorsman, which made it all the more hilarious — and a major point of pride — that he was utterly out-fished by his 8-year-old grandson.
Bruce leaves behind a legacy of generosity, tall tales, and hard work.
He is survived by his children, Chris (Lisa) Hamilton, Justin (Whitney) Hamilton, Casey (Sharlee) Hamilton, and William Hamilton; his grandchildren, Chance, Kayla, Savannah, Shelby, Jacob, Alissa, Breanna, and Treyson; and his sister, Linda (Lauris) Tysdal.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Doris Hamilton; and his former wife, Deborah Hamilton.
A celebration of Bruce’s life will be held at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 224 W Rd., Newcastle, WY 82701. A date and time will be announced at a later date.
