JACKSON (WNE) — At around 2:24 p.m. Saturday, a vehicle struck and killed a bicyclist at the intersection of South Park Loop Road and Melody Creek Lane.

The victim was 58-year-old Florence McCall-Phillips, according to Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue.

The Teton County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the crash, Sheriff Matt Carr said.

McCall moved to Jackson more than 30 years ago and built a thriving portrait photography studio that became a visual chronicle of the valley’s evolving community.

For decades, McCall documented the community’s milestones: from family portraits to high school senior photos, births to retirements and everything in between. Known for her mastery of light and composition, she was also remembered for her warmth, generosity and encouragement of young photographers.

News of McCall’s death prompted an outpouring of grief on social media over the weekend. Community members shared memories and tributes to a woman whose lens captured the spirit of Jackson Hole.

As of April, there had been no reported bicycle-related fatalities in Wyoming this year. None were reported in 2024, according to the Wyoming Department of Transportation.

Nationally, however, bicyclist fatalities are on the rise. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported a 38% increase in bicyclist deaths between 2011 and 2020, a trend it attributed to larger vehicles and increased speeding.
