A new statewide event aimed at showcasing Wyoming’s bartending talent and hospitality industry will make its debut in Weston County on Sept. 18–20, and organizers are hoping the Wyoming Ultimate Bartender Showdown will bring competitors from across all of the state’s 23 counties to Newcastle.

Hosted at the Super 8 by Wyndham Newcastle, the three-day event will blend professional development, high-energy competition and Wyoming-style hospitality into what organizers hope becomes a signature annual event for the community.

The weekend opens Friday, Sept. 18, with competitor check-in followed by a T.I.P.S. professionalism seminar focused on responsible service and industry standards. The evening transitions into a meet-and-greet BBQ in the lounge, where competitors, judges and local business owners can connect in a relaxed setting before the competition begins.

Saturday, Sept. 19, shifts into high gear with “Chopped”-style elimination rounds, where bartenders face off against the clock using mystery ingredients to craft creative cocktails under pressure. The field will narrow throughout the day, with only the
top competitors advancing to Sunday’s finale.

The event culminates Sunday, Sept. 20, with the “New Wyoming” cocktail challenge, where finalists will be presented with a mystery liquor and tasked with creating an original drink on the spot — one that captures the spirit and identity of Wyoming. A champion will be crowned later that afternoon, earning trophies, cash prizes and statewide bragging rights.

Event director Chris Hislop said the vision for the showdown goes well beyond a typical competition.

“We’re excited to bring a true statewide event to Newcastle,” Hislop said. “This isn’t just about winning — it’s about raising the bar for the entire industry and putting a spotlight on the kind of talent we have across Wyoming.”

Hislop added that the event draws inspiration from the state’s history while looking forward.

“Bartenders have always been part of Wyoming’s story — from the Old West saloons to today’s modern craft cocktail scene,” he said. “This is the next chapter of that tradition. These competitors are the modern-day versions of those legendary figures, and we’re giving them a stage to prove it.”

Organizers say the event is designed not only to attract top talent but also to bring visitors to Newcastle and create opportunities for local businesses.

Marketing director Bob Bonnar emphasized the broader impact for the community.

“This is an opportunity to showcase Newcastle to the entire state,” Bonnar said. “We’re proud of this community, and we want people to experience it — our businesses, our hospitality and the way we come together to host something special.”

Bonnar said community involvement will be key to the event’s long-term success.

“We want this to be something the whole town can take ownership of,” he said. “Whether you’re a business owner, a sponsor or just someone who wants to be part of the energy, there’s a place for you in this event.”

In addition to the competition, organizers are actively seeking partnerships with local and regional businesses interested in sponsorships, vendor opportunities or collaborative promotions tied to the weekend.

“We’re building this to be something bigger each year,” Hislop said. “The more the community gets involved, the stronger it becomes — and the more we can showcase everything this area has to offer.”

The Wyoming Ultimate Bartender Showdown is expected to become an annual event celebrating the state’s bartending professionals while driving economic activity and visibility for its host community.
