Barrasso bill would crack down on immigrant truck drivers

CHEYENNE (WNE) — U.S. Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., on Thursday introduced legislation to strengthen immigration enforcement and ensure safer roads for Americans.

The No Licenses for Illegal Drivers or Truckers Act, if passed into law, would require states to verify legal immigration status before issuing a driver’s license, commercial driver’s license or personal identification card.

States that fail to comply with this requirement would face a 10% reduction in their federal highway funding. These funds would then be redirected to states that comply with the law.

“Millions of illegal immigrants flooded into the United States under the Biden administration’s radical open border policies. Since many illegal immigrants do not speak English and cannot read road signs, these drivers make roads less safe for the law-abiding public,” Barrasso said in a news release. “

The bill is co-sponsored by U.S. Sens. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo.
