Back in the saddle again: WSF reopens equine stalls, programs

DOUGLAS (WNE) — Those participating in horse-based events at the Wyoming State Fair Park can get back in the saddle.

For many weeks, equestrian events were shut down at the Wyoming State Fair due to a rise in the deadly horse disease equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1), which can cause serious issues for horses – including hind leg lameness and incontinence in mares.

However, in a Dec. 23 Facebook post, the Wyoming State Fair announced that after constant monitoring and no recent spikes, it has decided to resume equine activities.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of our equine community as we prioritized the health and safety of horses across the state,” the State Fair said as it navigated the neurologic disease that can have up to a 40% mortality rate.

Owners who suspect their horse has EHV-1, should quarantine the horse to prevent the spread, especially since there is currently no treatment for the disease aside from symptomatic treatments.
