27-year-old man dies after being hit by pickup on Highway 59

GILLETTE (WNE) — A 27-year-old man was killed late Monday night after being hit by a pickup on Highway 59 south of Gillette. 

Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds said the man was hit near mile marker 106, which is south of Union Chapel Road and north of Four Corners Road, at about 11:30 p.m. Monday.

Wyoming Highway Patrol took over the investigation, and it has not yet released the 27-year-old’s name or any charges against the driver.

Witnesses told deputies the victim had gone for a walk after getting into an argument, and that he had called for a ride shortly before the crash, Reynolds said.

The driver, whose age hasn’t been released, was driving north on Highway 59 when he swerved to miss what he assumed was a deer in the road, Reynolds said. When he noticed the mirror on his Ford F-350 was damaged, he went back to look and found the man on the ground. The driver then called 911.

When the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office and the Gillette Police Department responded, the 27-year-old was unresponsive. They performed CPR before EMS and the Campbell County Fire Department took over care, Reynolds said.

The man was pronounced dead at the Campbell County Health emergency room.

This is the sixth fatal crash in Campbell County this year. 

The investigation is ongoing.
