JOYCE LEE AVERY

Sept. 11, 1942–Nov. 30, 2023

Joyce was born Sept. 11, 1942, in Hudson, Colorado, to Jack and Rue (Coffey) Dowdy.  The family moved to Upton, Wyoming, in 1953. She attended school in Upton, and graduated in 1960.

After graduating, she worked for Jones Electric in Upton. After three years, she moved  to Colorado and worked there for a few years. She moved back to Upton and began to work for Johnston Fuel Liners Company. She worked for them until their closing. She then went to work at the Weston County Treasurers office and later was elected the county treasurer. She stayed for almost two terms, but retired when her husband’s health issues required her to do so.

Joyce married Kenneth Avery in 1979 and they made their home in Newcastle. Ken and Joyce really enjoyed traveling and they did many trips with their good friends, Tim and Paulette Thompson. They also liked to check out different restaurants. Joyce was an avid gardener and a member of the garden club. Joyce loved and was very proud of her family for all they provided throughout her life and especially during her fight against cancer.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Ken; her parents; and her brother, Joe.

She is survived by her sister, Barb, and brother-in-law, Bill Riehemann; and her brother, Jack Dowdy.  Also survived by her nephews, Bill Jack and Les Riehmann, Eric, Adam and Christopher Dowdy, and niece, Courtney Guttekonda.

There will be a private family memorial service at a later date.
