Wheatland Police Department receives bomb threat

WHEATLAND (WNE) — The Wheatland Police Department received an emailed bomb threat last Friday specifically targeting it. The message contained threats indicating that individuals at the police department would be killed.

Upon review of the information contained in the email and the circumstances surrounding the threat, law enforcement determined that the threat should be treated as credible.

Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of the public, employees and responding emergency personnel, the WPD building was immediately evacuated.

Law enforcement secured the immediate area surrounding the building, resulting in temporary road closures and restricted access. As an additional safety precaution, nearby residents and businesses were evacuated while the threat was investigated.

A request for specialized assistance was made through the Wyoming Office of Homeland Security. A bomb detection K9 team from the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office responded to Wheatland and conducted a search of the building and surrounding area.

Following the search, the police department and surrounding area were determined to be clear, and the evacuation and road restrictions were lifted. Residents and businesses were permitted to return to the area.

The Wheatland Police Department is continuing to investigate the origin and circumstances of the threat. This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and no additional investigative details will be released at this time.
