The Newcastle High School boys and girls track and field teams opened their season with a strong showing at the Glen Legler Early Bird Track Meet in Casper, recording 15 season personal records and several top finishes.

Head coach Matt Conzelman said he was encouraged by the early progress from both squads.

“I am thrilled to share that the Dogies performed exceptionally well,” Conzelman said. “Both the men’s and women’s teams achieved an impressive 15 personal record bests this season.”

Leading the way for the boys was Landen Hill, who claimed first place in the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 11 inches. The Dogies also earned a podium finish in the sprint medley relay, where Collin McConkey, Dane Crabtree, Landen Hill and Archer Ohnstad placed third.

Crabtree added a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 7 inches, while Nate White placed eighth in the pole vault at 10 feet. Connor Kitch turned in solid throws in both events, recording marks of 114 feet in the discus and 34 feet, 7.5 inches in the shot put.

On the track, Collin McConkey placed 14th in the 200 meters, and Adam Butler finished 12th in the 110-meter hurdles.

For the girls, Anika Oleson led the way with a fifth-place finish in the triple jump at 32 feet, 11.5 inches, while Adalyn Olson took eighth in the long jump with a mark of 15 feet, 6.75 inches.

Madalyn Francis placed seventh in the pole vault at 9 feet, and Olson also turned in a strong performance on the track, finishing 11th in the 100-meter hurdles.

Hollie Swentesky recorded personal-best efforts in both the 400 meters and high jump, and the 4x100-meter relay team of Francis, Josie Smith, Hana Alexander and Oleson also posted a season-best time.

The meet provided a solid starting point for the Dogies, with athletes across both teams setting new marks and gaining valuable early-season experience.

The Dogies will split squads this week as the team heads into a busy stretch of competition. Pole vaulters and selected throwers will travel to Upton for the Mick Tonkel Fly High Classic, while the remainder of the team will compete at the Queen City Classic on Friday at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota.

Conzelman said the split is necessary due to entry limits at the Spearfish meet.

“Although I prefer to keep the team together, the Queen City Classic limits us to three entries per event,” he said. “We will finalize which athletes are attending each meet by Wednesday.”
